The Death Of Ana Carolina Reston
My readers know that one of my main areas of research and writing concerns how the popular
American celebrity aesthetic and ethos influences the body image and psychology of regular, ordinary women both in America and internationally. It is quite important to add the internationally part, because, we shouldn’t forget that certain physique standards which have largely originated in our celebrity culture have influenced the entire world. I know many realize this already, and, I can’t stress how important it is to keep this as a constant perspective.
Point in case is the tragic
death of Brazilian fashion model Ana Carolina Reston. Ms. Reston, at the age of 21, died from health maladies resulting from anorexia. That’s the bottom line. The news states the facts. But, what I want to state is just how sad and tragic and sick and unnecessary this is … a beautiful young woman is now buried… and why?! WHY? Why did this woman, 5’8″ tall die at the weight of 88 pounds? The details of this aren’t whimsical. They aren’t arbitrary. I’m sorry if I sound angry, but, you know, I am a little angry! I’m a lot angry!
Just how is it exactly that this beauty standard came to be? As I’ve written about elsewhere, it wasn’t always this way. In fact, not long ago, right here in America, a considerably greater voluptuousness was a standard. No longer obviously. And, what can we do? What can we do?
I don’t want to alienate anyone with my anger… it’s just that this is a very emotional thing for me …
Please, let your daughters know you love them just the way they are.
Yours,
Katie
