More On Ana Carolina Reston

Well, if there is an upside to the tragic death of Ana Carolina Reston … and, I am the sort of person that has to find the upside! You see, life would be too sad if I didn’t do this. So, if there’s a silver lining to this heart-breaking story, it’s that Ana and her troubles are getting a lot of exposure in the news media… and, that’s a very good thing that will help people!

Picture Ana Carolina RestonI was browsing just now and I see that People has another piece on Ana… one of the particularly saddening lines in the People story is a quotation from Lica Kohlrausch, who was the director at Ana’s modeling agency. You see, Kohlrausch said that Ana never “grew tall enough for the runway.”

Something about that line got me crying. Something about that quotation encapsulates the whole sickness of our brains all over the world. She never “grew tall enough for the runway.” As if, somehow, she’s no longer a human being but some sort of livestock. You see, it’s exactly Ana’s story that’s the reason I started this site.

And, what can we ultimately do about the popular and destructive beauty aesthetic that has propagated around the world: originating, predominantly in Hollywood celebrity culture and being helped along considerably by New York City, Milan, and Paris…. but, things are at a point now where you can’t even quite assign origin because it’s all so ubiquitous … and, why does it even matter… what matters is… what are we going to do?

What are you and I going to do to prevent another Ana Carolina Reston story?

Bloggers like you and I can make a difference in this digital world. The story of Ana Carolina is heartbreaking, she is just one example of what media, hollywood, and the fashion industry has created.

We buy into it continously though, that’s the real problem. Self esteem is at the core of the problem and until mothers, and women accept themselves and become solid role models, the beauty myth will perpetuate.

Keep up the great work!
