Michael Richards And The Apology Concept
You know, I’m thinking about the times in my life when I’ve been wronged, and, I’ll add, God knows there are enough times when I’ve been the one who’s done wrong… so, believe me, I am not on some silly sanctimonious trip.
I remember when a former boyfriend cheated on me, and, he did apologize… profusely… but, really what did that change? When I found out, I couldn’t stop crying, and, when he apologized, he was crying, and, I was crying, but, what did it really change?
The betrayal had still taken place. Nothing could change that. And, as many know, I do try, to the best of my ability, to follow Christ’s teachings; but, some things are hard to let go of… it’s the nature of reality: once the action is committed, it can’t be taken back.
Oh, why am I rambling this way?
It’s because I now see that the men whom Richards attacked in his hate monologue are demanding an apology from Richards: a face-to-face apology. Frank McBride and Kyle Doss are the two men who took the brunt of Richards hate speech, and, I’m just wondering what they stand to gain from such an apology.
Richards already apologized to them and the world on the David Letterman show. Now, granted, the apology was unusual. Richards seemed strange and his voice sounded affected. But, he did apologize, and, he has humiliated himself already in the eyes of the world, and, his name is forever tarnished. And, Richards apologized to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. And, he killed Cosmo Kramer! And, much to Jerry Seinfeld’s unhappiness, his Seinfeld brand is forever sullied. And, there’s a lesson in there that we should all learn from: years and years of hard work and dedication can get all fucked-up by a bad evening. It’s the way the universe works. And, it’s powerful. Oh, man, the ways of the universe are powerful! Anyway (lol)
What remains? McBride and Doss have Gloria Allred by their side, and, believe me, if you have Ms. Allred by your side, you are not messing around and playing games! So, does this whole thing just come down to money? Isn’t that the way most things end up working out? Jerry Seinfeld’s worried about sales of the new Seinfeld dvds? Michael Richards is worried if his financial future as an entertainer is finished? And, Doss and McBride want a few bucks to ease their racial hurt?
You tell me. I don’t want to get totally cynical.
Yours,
Katie
