My Heroes: The Granny Peace Brigade

Add this to the Should Be Celebrities category, and, it’s a beautiful thing… these peaceful grannies are indeed becoming celebrities … and, that’s really encouraging! My grandmother wasn’t nearly so idealistic; her idea of a good-natured protest was explaining to me why I was a misfit, but, well, she’s dead now… Rest In Peace.
Anyway, these peaceful grandmas are truly inspiring… Here’s the story summarized:
Out in Philadelphia there’s a group called the Granny Peace Brigade. Their membership includes the poet Sonia Sanchez and Lillian Willoughby (91 years-old and in a wheelchair). On June 28 of this year, the Granny Peace Brigade entered a military recruitment center (apple pies in hand.) They proclaimed that they didn’t want young folks to go fight overseas and that they would happily go in their place.
The officers, naturally, didn’t comply with the grandma’s request, and, the grannies defiantly refused to leave. They went so far as to dissuade young folks outside from entering and volunteering for the military. Soon enough, the eleven protesting grannies were taken off to jail and charged with defiant trespassing.
Well, today, Municipal Court Judge Deborah Griffin kicked the defiant trespass charge. Their lawyer even quoted Thomas Jefferson:
A little rebellion now and then is a good thing.
I find the Granny Peace Brigade to be thoroughly inspiring, and, they are right. It disturbs me to no end the way so many people are dying overseas… and for what? For what? I often pray and think of the teachings of Jesus Christ, and, what particularly disturbs me is that some Christians argue in favor of war… I must have missed that passage in the Bible.
God bless, this Granny Peace Brigade. These are the type of celebrities I want in my world. All praise to God these grannies renew my faith!
I see there’s a Granny Peace Brigade website, and, it says this:
We call upon grandmothers throughout the United States to join us January 18, 2007 in Washington, DC for a long overdue civics lesson. Meet with your Senators. Deliver a report card on their past performance. Outline your demands. We must seize this opportunity to demonstrate the democratic process at work.
Oh, yes, this is just the type of thing that inspires me! May God be with you Grandmas!
