Well, I certainly appreciate Katie’s unhappiness and LaTosha’s disgust with Rosie O’Donnell’s recent, anti-Chinese, racist insensitivity. And, since we all feel that this is getting inadequate media coverage… well, we’ll just keep hammering away at it a while until it does. : ) It seems that that’s one of the things we do best.

In addition, to make matters worse, I think what really upsets everyone the most is that Rosie refuses to say sorry. This is really quite baffling! We understand that everybody has lapses in judgment and says stupid things. If I had a nickel for every dumb thing I ever said, I’d never have to work again. But, the key is in openly acknowledging that you made a mistake.

However, no apology appears to be coming from Rosie, and, it seems to me that over a billion people deserve one. Instead, I see this on her blog today:

when i have no words
a song soothes
with thanks to john mayer
as my heart aches

I hate to see you cry
Lying there in that position
There’s things you need to hear
So turn off your tears
And listen

That is a partial quotation from a poem that appears on Rosie’s blog that, presumably, she wrote.

The text of the poem would indicate the author (again, presumably Rosie) indeed has a capacity for both compassion and empathy. You’ll notice, the author hates “to see you cry.” The author is quite caring and sensitive. Very interesting.

Very interesting… because by refusing to apologize to the 1.3 billion Chinese folks in the world, some (including me) are interpreting a callous disregard to the emotions and feelings of others. And, that’s certainly not a very nice way to go through life. Not only does it hurt others, it hurts you.

I’d like to take a look at the thoughts of another poet named Michelle. Let’s take a peek at something she said in a 2002 interview:

I went to a Catholic school that was predominantly white. It sounds melodramatic now, but it really happened. I have this memory of these white kids surrounding me and my brother, dancing around us singing “ching chong” songs and slanting their eyes. That was the first time I ever heard the word “chink.” That’s also the first time I became aware that being Asian or part Asian was not seen as a good thing by some people. And it only escalated as I got older.

Interesting.

But, in the case of Ms. O’Donnell, we are forced to infer that Rosie considers there to be nothing hurtful or wrong about her recent ching chong comments, in which she characterized the Chinese population in a rather, I dare say, puerile manner.

Okay, well, I don’t imagine Rosie has any grounds then to mind her new CelebritySatan moniker: Ching Chong Rosie. After all, there’s nothing inherently wrong or offensive about this moniker. If there were, surely Ching Chong Rosie would have apologized for the utterance.

No, there’s nothing wrong with it at all… In fact, Ching Chong Rosie’s publicist informs us that we just don’t grasp Ching Chong Rosie’s humor. Ah, wonderful. We’re happy that Ching Chong Rosie finds the “ching chong” expression to be so humorous!

Wonderful indeed.

Ching Chong Rosie should be laughing her ass off about now then.
