Should Don Imus Be Fired?

So, Don Imus, on his radio show, referred to the Rutgers NCAA women’s basketball team as follows:

“That’s some nappy-headed hos there, I’m going to tell you that.”

And, that’s a fucked-up thing to say that’s sure to hurt some feelings. Just think of these African American women and their parents and other loved ones. How must a remark like that make them feel?

As an African American woman, let me tell you, those sort of remarks really hurt. Sure, as you get older, you develop a tougher skin, and, you’ve gone through the racial warzone every day of your life, but, believe me, it still hurts… oh, hell yeah, it still hurts.

So, what’s happening now is what’s to be expected. Reverend Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are on the scene and Mr. Imus is apologizing and explaining etc. Yes, when a celebrity makes some racist remarks… well, it’s become like a script (Michael Richards, Mel Gibson, Rosie O. etc)

And, it remains that some nice young women were insulted in a really nasty way. If Don Imus is fired, racism won’t go away. People may become even more hesitant to express the racist ideas, but, that doesn’t mean that they are no longer in the individuals heart. That’s what I think about all the time. It’s easy to say sorry. It’s not as easy to mean it. It’s easy to say nothing. It’s harder to free the heart from hatred and ignorance.

Should Don Imus be fired?

Sadly, it really doesn’t matter.
