Roger Avary Kills
Well, here’s another tragic story in a world-filled with tragedy.
Roger Avary: his claim to fame is having penned Pulp Fiction. Man, I love that movie. I love Bruce Willis’ character. I can relate to the pathos and failure.
Anyway, Roger Avary has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and drunk driving. It seems he got into a car accident which killed one of his passengers, and ejected his wife out of the car.
Brutal stuff. Could you imagine an accident so forceful that it actually ejects your ass out of the car!
I’m a bartender, and, I deal with this shit. I think about it every day. I cut people off because I think they’re intoxicated. I call them taxis. In some cases, I plead with drunken customers to take taxis. I tell them, “Your car will be in the parking lot in the morning.” I’ve sent people out of the bar, stumbling, swearing at me. I tell them, “You’ll be back tomorrow thanking me.” And, sure enough… they always come back thanking me for looking out.
Drunk driving is obviously a fucked-up thing… as is alcoholism. The problem is that our society encourages it. We have thousands of bars where you usually have to get in a car to get to. We serve the liquor. And, then what… they’ve got to get home.
I don’t mean to sound overly sympathetic to Avary. He fucked-up. I’m sure his conscience will be wrecked for the rest of his life. Such a talented guy. Ruined too.
